55 (The Prestige Recordings)

Miles Davis’s Miles 55: The Prestige Recordings offers a focused portrait of his 1955 breakthrough year, when he formed his First Great Quintet with John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones. The collection presents 16 tracks from the Prestige era that showcase Davis’s evolving trumpet voice and the hard bop and modal directions that would anchor his later masterpieces. Remastered from the original analog tapes by Paul Blakemore and paired with new liner notes by Ashley Kahn and session notes by Dan Morgenstern, this release deepens our understanding of Davis’s artistic development. A landmark in jazz history, Miles 55 captures the moment when Davis’s improvisational language began to redefine modern jazz.
